What is erectile dysfunction (ED)?
Erectile dysfunction is the inability for a man to get and/or keep an
erection sufficient for sexual activity. Also called impotence, erectile dysfunction is
considered a more appropriate term because it provides
a less judgmental and more accurate description of a very specific problem.
Many men will have an occasional erection problem at some time in their lives, but for others it is a frequent
problem. Erectile dysfunction is so widespread that in the United States, about half of all men aged 40 to 70
years experience it to some degree. And ED affects millions more worldwide.
Erectile dysfunction is not something to be embarrassed about. It doesn't mean that a man is
infertile or unable to have an orgasm or ejaculate. Since it is an established fact that erectile ability is not
related to orgasm or ejaculation, men with ED no longer
have to be burdened by the myth that they are somehow lacking in virility or potency.
Erectile dysfunction can have a significant impact on a
man's life, affecting his self-confidence, self-image, and self-worth. The partners of men with ED may also
question themselves, and may feel that they have lost their attractiveness. Both the man with ED and his
partner may believe that ED is either "all in your mind" or a natural part of
aging. The truth is, ED is a treatable condition in most men who have it.
How erections occur?
When a man is sexually aroused, the arteries in the penis relax and
widen, allowing more blood to flow into the penis. As the arteries in the penis expand and
harden, the veins that normally carry blood away from
the penis become compressed, restricting the blood flow out of the
penis. With more blood flowing in and less flowing out, the penis enlarges, resulting in an
erection.
What causes ED?
In men with ED, the chemical reactions responsible for erections do not take place as usual, so the arteries
don't expand and the penis cannot fill with blood.
It was once mistakenly believed that ED was either all in a man's mind or an unavoidable result of getting
older. While it's true that age can be a factor, we now know that the majority of cases of ED are associated
with physical conditions, not just age.
